May 3, 1849 – May 26, 1914

Jacob Riis was a Danish-American social reformer, "muckraking" journalist and social documentary photographer. He used his photographic and journalistic talents to help the poor people in New York City.

I have seen documentaries about his life but was reminded again about him when I discovered the book he wrote, Is There A Santa Claus? I love the cover of the book and was intrigued to find out the story inside. I am easily attracted to good illustrations and was not disappointed by this book. What I was disappointed about was the text of the book. It seems like a book that wants to be, Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus. I got lost after wading through many pages. I finally gave up and just collected the images that it contains.

I do not know if Mr. Riis drew the pictures himself. I doubt it as he is best known for only journalism and photography.
